What Our Customers Say
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between andirons and a grate?
An andiron pair is L-shaped — the horizontal bar lifts logs off the floor for airflow, and the upright front feet keep logs from rolling forward. A fire grate is a single basket-style frame with bars along the bottom that holds the wood pile inside the firebox — it does the same airflow job as andirons but in one piece. Most modern fireplaces use a grate; andirons are common in traditional or decorative installations.
What size grate or andirons fit my fireplace?
Choose a grate or andiron pair at least 2"–3" smaller on each side than the firebox interior — this leaves room for ash buildup and tools. The grate should sit flat on the floor with the front bar slightly inset from the opening. For andirons, both feet should rest fully inside the firebox. Steel and cast iron should be at least ½" thick for durability under heat.
What tools do I need for my fireplace?
The standard fireplace tool set includes poker, shovel, broom/brush, and tongs — usually paired with a stand. The poker rearranges burning wood; the shovel scoops out ash (let cool 24+ hours first); the brush sweeps loose debris off the hearth; the tongs handle hot logs without burning your hands. Optional add-ons: a log carrier, hearth gloves, and a metal ash bucket with lid.
How do I clean and maintain fireplace accessories?
For cast iron and steel — brush off ash with a stiff brush, wipe with a dry cloth. For deep cleaning, use a damp cloth with mild dish soap and dry thoroughly to prevent rust. Brass and copper — polish occasionally with a brass cleaner. Don't use abrasive scrubbers on powder-coated or painted finishes — warm soapy water and a soft cloth is enough. Always cool fully before cleaning.
