Fireplace Screens

Spark protection — freestanding & fitted64 screens From $525

Fireplace screens — mesh curtain screens (mounted to firebox), decorative free-standing screens (placed in front of opening), and combination spark guards. Custom-sized for any masonry or prefab fireplace, made in the USA, free shipping across the continental US. Three types of fireplace screens — pick the right one 1. Mesh curtain screens (mounted) Steel mesh on a tension rod or pull-chain mechanism, mounted INSIDE your fireplace opening. Slides open/closed like a curtain. Best spark protection during active fires. ~$300-$700 custom-sized. The "set it and forget it" option for households that burn wood frequently. 2. Decorative free-standing screens Wrought iron or steel framed panels that sit in front of the firebox opening. Often hand-forged with scrollwork, art glass insets, or geometric patterns. Easy to move when you want a clean view. $250-$1,200 depending on size and design complexity. 3. Glass + mesh combination doors Most premium custom fireplace doors at ExceptionalFire include an optional internal mesh curtain — open the glass during burns + close the mesh for spark protection. Best of both worlds for serious wood burners. See our Glass Doors vs Mesh Screens guide. Why every wood-burning fireplace needs a screen An open firebox is a fire hazard. Sparks pop unpredictably during seasoned hardwood burns; pine and softwoods spit embers more aggressively; even gas log inserts can release small particles. A mesh curtain screen catches sparks before they hit your hearth, rug, or upholstery. Decorative screens add a second function — they turn the firebox into a designed element when not in use. The black hole of an unscreened cold firebox becomes a focal point with a forged-iron screen in front. If your glass doors are designed to BURN CLOSED (ceramic glass on inserts/stoves), no — the doors themselves contain sparks. If your glass doors are tempered (most custom doors), you should open them during burns and use a mesh curtain INSIDE the frame for spark protection. Best solution: glass doors with optional mesh curtain (available on most ExceptionalFire premium doors). Will a mesh screen reduce my fireplace's heat output? Slightly, but not significantly — mesh has high open area and radiates heat through. The trade-off is well worth it for safety. How do I clean a fireplace screen? Vacuum with a brush attachment to remove dust + ash. For stuck-on creosote, use a soft brush + diluted dish soap. Avoid abrasive cleaners on coated mesh. Are decorative screens fire-safe? Yes — all ExceptionalFire decorative screens are wrought iron or steel, both inherently non-combustible. Designed to handle radiant heat from active fires while placed 6-12" in front of the firebox opening. Fireplace Screens — Spark Protection in Every Style

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between a screen and a door?

Screens use mesh (and sometimes glass) to contain sparks during a burn but don't seal the opening when the fireplace is cold. Doors use solid glass and a continuous gasket to seal against air movement up the chimney. Many homes have both — door for off-season, screen for active fires.

Do I need a fireplace screen if I have a door?

Not strictly — closed glass doors contain sparks during normal operation. But many homeowners prefer a screen for the open-fire experience (the radiant heat output is higher with the doors fully open). A screen behind the open doors gives the best of both.

What types of screens do you carry?

Single-panel, tri-fold, four-fold, arch, contemporary flat-frame, traditional spark guards, and child-safe gated screens. Each type fits a different opening size and aesthetic. The product filters narrow by style and material.

Are fireplace screens custom-sized?

Some are — custom-size screens build to your exact opening in 14-21 business days. Standard-size screens ship in 3-5 days from inventory. Most homes can use a standard size; only odd dimensions or arch openings need custom builds.

What's the warranty on a fireplace screen?

5-year manufacturing warranty on frame welding and finish. Mesh wear from sparks (occasional small holes after years of heavy use) is excluded. Replacement mesh panels are available for most models — usually $80-$150 per panel.

How do I clean a fireplace screen?

Wipe the frame with a soft cloth. For mesh, brush off ash with a soft-bristle brush. Avoid water on mesh — it accelerates oxidation and can leave water spots on the frame. Powder-coated frames clean with a damp microfiber if needed.
