Inside Fit vs Overlap Fit Fireplace Doors: Complete Comparison
If you're shopping for custom fireplace doors, the single biggest decision isn't finish, glass, or handle — it's fit type. Inside Fit and Overlap Fit produce wildly different looks, install differently, and tolerate different opening shapes. Get this wrong and the door either doesn't fit or looks bolted-on. Get it right and the door disappears into the architecture.
The 30-second answer
- Overlap Fit = frame mounts on the FRONT FACE, covers the brick edge. Forgiving (±1/8" tolerance). Hides imperfections. Traditional look. ~70% of installs.
- Inside Fit = frame mounts INSIDE the opening, flush with the face. Precise (±1/16" tolerance). Modern recessed look. ~30% of installs.
Pick Overlap if your masonry is rough, hand-laid, or out of square. Pick Inside if your opening is clean (prefab metal or modern masonry) and you want a built-in look.
How they actually differ
The difference is structural. Same opening, two completely different mounting strategies.
Overlap Fit: frame on the face
The frame is BIGGER than the opening. It sits on the brick or stone face SURROUNDING the opening, with the frame edge extending 1/2" to 2-1/2" past the opening on each side (varies by product). The opening edge is hidden behind the frame.
Visible footprint: door frame + an extra inch or two of brick covered by frame trim.
Inside Fit: frame inside the opening
The frame is SLIGHTLY SMALLER than the opening. It sits INSIDE the opening, flush with the front face. The brick or metal opening edge is fully visible — you see the surround AND the door, both clearly.
Visible footprint: door frame perfectly inside the opening, surround completely visible.

When Overlap Fit is the right choice
Pick Overlap if any of these apply:
- Hand-laid masonry with visible mortar variance. The frame covers the rough edge and presents a clean rectangle.
- Out-of-square opening (your three width measurements vary by more than 1/4"). Overlap doesn't care about square — it sits on the face.
- Chipped, broken, or worn opening edges. Frame hides the damage.
- Traditional, classic, or rustic home style. Frame-on-face reads traditional.
- You want a forgiving install. First-time homeowner DIY install? Overlap.
- Your existing surround is rough stacked stone or textured brick veneer. Overlap mounts to the face; Inside has no opening edge to seat against.

When Inside Fit is the right choice
Pick Inside if all of these apply:
- Your opening is reasonably square. Variance under 1/4" between top/middle/bottom widths.
- The opening edge is clean. Prefab metal frames are perfect (always square). Cleanly-built modern masonry usually works.
- You want a modern, recessed, architectural look. Inside Fit reads contemporary.
- You can measure to ±1/16 inch precisely. No room for sloppy measurement.
- You want the brick/stone to remain visible. Inside Fit shows the surround; Overlap covers the edge.

Special case: prefab fireplaces
Prefab metal fireboxes (Heat-N-Glo, Majestic, Lennox, Superior, FMI) usually work with both fits — but the visual result differs:
- Inside Fit on prefab: door tucks inside the metal frame; clean modern look. The factory metal frame stays visible around the door.
- Overlap Fit on prefab: frame covers the factory metal frame entirely; gives a "wider" door that hides the factory hardware.
For most prefab homeowners, Overlap is the safer bet — it covers louvers and any factory trim quirks. For modern aesthetic preferences, Inside Fit gives the cleaner result.
Special case: Brookfield ZC Deluxe family
One product line at ExceptionalFire is built specifically for prefab fireplaces with louvers (top + bottom vents): the Brookfield ZC Deluxe. It's a full-cover door designed to hide BOTH the firebox opening AND the louver vents above and below. It always uses Overlap Fit by definition (the frame covers louvers). If you have a Heat-N-Glo or similar prefab with visible louvers, Brookfield ZC is purpose-built for you.
Cost: same. Lead time: similar.
Both fits cost the same — the price is per door style and finish, not per fit type. Lead times are also similar (14–21 business days for custom builds in either fit). The decision is purely about look and how clean your opening is.
Tolerance and what it actually means
Tolerance is how much measurement variance the manufacturing process accepts. ±1/8" for Overlap means your tape-measure reading can be 1/8" off in either direction without affecting fit. ±1/16" for Inside means the same but tighter.
At ExceptionalFire, our shop also auto-trims 1/16" from each side as a safety margin — meaning even with the tighter Inside Fit tolerance, you get a small additional buffer. If you want zero auto-trim and exact-size build, write the precise dimensions in the order Notes — we'll build to spec.
If gaps appear after Inside Fit install
Even with precise measurement, occasionally a small gap appears after install — usually 1/16" to 1/8" between the door frame and the opening edge. This is most common when the opening is slightly tapered. The fix: fill gaps with mortar tinted to match your fireplace face. The result is seamless and indistinguishable from the original masonry. This is standard professional installer practice.
Frequently asked questions
Can I switch from Overlap to Inside Fit on the same product?
Some products support both (Carolina, Cavestone, Stiletto regular, full-view styles). Others are designed for one fit only (Stiletto Cutback is overlap-only; Rainbow is inside-fit-only). Each product page shows which fits are supported under "Fit Type."
Which is more energy-efficient?
Both are equally energy-efficient when correctly installed. Both seal the firebox and stop room air from being pulled up the chimney by natural draft. Industry estimates: 8–10% heating bill reduction in cold climates with closed glass doors when the fireplace is cold.
Will Inside Fit work on my old brick fireplace?
Maybe. If the opening edges are reasonably straight and the variance is under 1/4", yes. If the brick is hand-laid 1950s-style with visible mortar lumps and slightly tapered edges, Overlap is the safer choice. Send a photo to the AI Expert for a personalized recommendation.
Does Inside Fit cost more than Overlap?
No. Same price for the same door. The fit type is selected at order time at no additional cost.
Which lasts longer?
Both last equally — the fit type doesn't affect durability. Frame steel is the same; finish wear is the same; glass life is the same. Both carry our 5-year warranty.
Can I see what each looks like before I order?
Yes. Each product page shows photos in both fits when available. Use the AI Fireplace Expert to upload your fireplace and see fit recommendations side-by-side.
What if I want Inside Fit but my opening is slightly out of square?
Two options. (1) Pick Inside Fit and accept that small gaps may appear; fill with tinted mortar after install. (2) Pick Overlap Fit and let the frame cover the variance. Most installers in this scenario default to Overlap for the cleanest visual result.
How do I know my fit choice is right BEFORE ordering?
Three checks: (1) Use our AI Fireplace Expert for a photo-based recommendation. (2) Read your three width measurements — variance > 1/4" = Overlap. (3) Look at the surround condition — rough or uneven = Overlap; flat and clean = Inside is fine.
