The company operated out of Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin, traced its roots to the Prentiss-Wabers appliance business, and was gone from the market by the end of the 1980s. That last part matters, because the FF41 — one of Preway's 41-series wood-burning built-ins — has now outlived its manufacturer by more than three decades. Nobody makes original FF41 parts. FF41 or BE41? Sort that out first
Preway's 41-series included two closely related built-ins, the BE41 and the FF41, and published aftermarket size charts show both take the same door opening: 36 inches wide by 21 1/2 inches tall. That makes them siblings, not twins — the trim, louver arrangement, and face details differ, which is why replacement-door suppliers list them as separate models. Look for the metal rating plate, usually riveted inside the firebox on a side wall or visible behind the lower grille, and read the model line. What "41" actually means for your measurements
The 41 in FF41 is a unit designation, not a glass size. The documented door opening is 36 x 21 1/2 — but documented is not the same as installed. These fireplaces went into homes in the 1970s and 1980s, and forty years of remodels leave fingerprints: raised hearths, added tile surrounds, replaced facings, settled framing. Openings on "identical" 41-series units can differ by enough to matter. So treat the chart number as a starting point and measure your own opening with the steps in our measuring guide — width and height at three points each, smallest number wins. Why you can't grab an off-the-shelf door
- The originals are discontinued. Preway folded decades ago; OEM doors and trim exist only as salvage, with no supply behind them.
- Masonry doors are the wrong tool. A standard masonry door overlaps the face of a brick fireplace and anchors into mortar. An FF41 is a sheet-metal appliance behind a decorative face — an overlap frame would cover its louvers, and there is no masonry to anchor into.
- Stock prefab doors are scarce and rigid. A small number of stock zero-clearance enclosures were made for the 41-series, but they come in limited styles and finishes and assume a textbook opening. If your opening deviates, or you want anything beyond a basic black frame, stock is a dead end.

Habits that ruin 41-series fireplaces
A few things we regularly see go wrong on old Preways. Burning wood with tempered-glass doors closed is the big one: tempered glass on a prefab door is designed for radiant heat with the doors open, and running a hot fire behind closed tempered panels can shatter them. Drilling new holes in the firebox shell to mount an ill-fitting frame is next — it compromises the box's construction and can expose nearby combustibles.
