Your Fireplace
Choose your fireplace type to find the right door options.
Masonry is built from brick or stone with a chimney. Prefab (factory-built) is a metal firebox, often with a brand name stamped inside.

Enter the inside width and height of your fireplace opening.

Focus a measurement to highlight it. Your template confirms the arch curve.
Use a tape measure to find the smallest opening dimensions, then enter your actual readings in the width and height fields.
- Find the narrowest width. Start at the top, middle and bottom, then check between them and at every projecting brick or stone.
- Enter the smallest width you find in the Width field. Keep the tape level; do not subtract an allowance.
- Find the lowest height across the opening, checking left, center, right and between. Use the top measuring point explained below.
Where to measure at the top
Look up just inside the top edge. A lintel bar is the steel support above a masonry fireplace opening. It can be hidden behind brick, stone or trim.
Confirm the recessed depth for your selected frame and mounting with our team.
Measure to the top of the opening.
Measure to the bottom of the bar.
Not sure which applies? Keep your opening height and, if you can see the bar, note the height to its underside and its distance back from the front. Add these in the order notes so our team can confirm the measuring point for your frame.
- Find the narrowest width of the front metal opening. Check top, middle, bottom and any tighter points between them.
- Enter the smallest width you find in the Width field. Keep the tape level; do not subtract an allowance.
- Find the lowest height from the bottom to the top of the front metal opening. Check left, center, right and between; enter the smallest height.
Trim and louvers
Do not include the trim flange around the frame. Louvers above and below on some models — measure the metal opening either way.

How to measure
Opening dimensions and measuring guidance
- Measure the opening. Measure the width at the top and bottom, then the height on the left and right. Record each measurement to the nearest 1/8 inch.
- Keep the smaller width and height. Enter the opening measurements in the configurator. The selected model’s fitting instructions determine the finished frame size.
- Note the details. Include a photo showing the hearth, lintel and surrounding trim. For a factory-built fireplace, also photograph the make and model label. For an arch, record the width, side height and center peak height.

How do I measure my fireplace for the Cavestone?
Measure the fireplace opening, not the existing doors. Take three width readings and three height readings, then use the smallest of each. See our measuring guide or ask our team for help.
Will the Cavestone fit a prefab or zero-clearance firebox?
The Cavestone is a masonry door, for a firebox of brick or stone. A prefab, zero-clearance metal firebox needs a different frame, so we build other models for those. Send a photo of your fireplace and we will tell you which ones fit yours.
Can I replace the doors that are on my fireplace now?
Yes. Start by identifying your fireplace type and measuring the opening behind the existing doors. Our team can help you select the fit and check any mounting requirements.
Can I install the Cavestone myself, or do I need a pro?
Use the installation instructions for your door and fireplace. Mounting depends on the opening and surround. If you would like help deciding whether to install it yourself, send our team a photo of your fireplace.
Can I burn a fire with the glass doors closed?
Follow the instructions for your fireplace and door model. Tempered-glass doors are generally kept open while a wood fire is burning, with the mesh screen closed. A ceramic-glass upgrade does not automatically make every fireplace suitable for closed-door burning.
What sizes do you build, and is there a maximum width?
Custom-made to fit your opening. Enter its width and height, then choose your finish and door options. For a very wide opening, send us the measurements and we can help with a quote.
