The SA36 and its look-alike siblings

Martin's 36-inch lineup is famously confusing. The SA36 sits alongside the SI36, SF36, and SF36I, which aftermarket door charts group together because they present the same door-mounting dimensions — roughly a 36 x 19-3/8 inch front opening. The SC36, SC36MB, SCF36, and SCF36I are close cousins that some retailers list on the same fit chart and others split out separately. Why the original doors are gone

Martin Industries filed for Chapter 11 protection on December 27, 2002, and its operating assets were sold to Monessen Hearth Systems in a sale completed in early 2003. Production of SA36 replacement doors ended with it. Leftover OEM bi-folds still surface on Amazon, Walmart, and eBay from time to time — always with a strict "fits only" model list — but stock is sporadic, finishes are limited to builder-grade black or brass, and the glass and frame quality is what it was in 1995. Once that trickle dries up for your size, the only real path is a door built to your firebox.

Why a generic 36-inch door won't work

• The opening is not really "36 inches." The SA36's usable front opening is about 36 x 19-3/8 inches, and the door must land on the flat face inside that opening. An off-the-shelf door sized for a different box will leave gaps or simply not seat.
• Masonry doors overlap; prefab doors cannot. A masonry-style door is designed to overlap brick and anchor into mortar joints. On a steel zero-clearance box there is nothing safe to anchor into outside the opening, and overlapping the face can trap heat against the metal shell.
• Inside-fit is a safety requirement, not a style choice. A correct SA36 door mounts inside the opening using the firebox's own geometry, keeps the cooling vents clear, and never requires drilling into the outer shell.

Five mistakes SA36 owners should avoid

• Burning with tempered-glass doors closed. Bi-fold prefab doors use tempered glass; burn with the doors fully open and the mesh closed, and close the doors only as the fire dies down.
• Drilling the firebox shell. The steel shell and its air channels are the safety system. A correctly built door needs no new holes.
• Buying a masonry overlap door because it is cheaper. It cannot mount safely on a zero-clearance box.
• Ordering by model number alone. The 36-inch Martin family shares charts, but your actual opening decides the fit.
• Blocking the louvers or vents. Those openings cool the shell; any door or surround that covers them is a hazard.

Can I still buy the original Martin SA36 bi-fold door? Martin Industries has been gone since its 2003 bankruptcy sale. Remaining OEM stock appears occasionally on marketplaces with strict fit lists, but availability is unpredictable and finishes are limited. A custom door is the permanent answer.
