TFC or TLC? Telling the two 42-inch Temcos apart
Temco sold two 42-inch faces on essentially the same firebox. The TFC42 is the flush-face version: a smooth metal surround without the slotted grilles. The TLC42 is the louvered version, with visible vent slots above and below the opening. Blower and parts references for this series also list builder-program aliases such as the A42F (flush) and A42L (louvered), so the name on your paperwork may not match the face on your wall. Aftermarket fitment charts treat the two as sharing one door opening, but identification still matters — it tells us how your unit cools itself and how the door frame should attach.
Confirm the revision: TFC42-3 vs TFC42-4
The TFC42 went through revisions, and the ones you will see on rating plates are the TFC42-3 and TFC42-4. Door makers list both revisions against the same opening size, so for a replacement door the revision rarely changes the answer — but record the full model number anyway. The rating plate is a small metal tag inside the firebox; run a flashlight along the side walls and the edge of the opening. Why there is no off-the-shelf answer
- The original doors are discontinued. Temco no longer exists as a fireplace manufacturer, and OEM door kits for the TFC42 are out of production. What circulates on auction sites is decades-old used hardware with tired hinges and no glass warranty.
- Masonry doors physically cannot mount here. A "universal" fireplace door is built to overlap brick and clamp into a masonry opening. The TFC42 is a sheet-metal appliance — there is no masonry to grip, and an overlap frame pressed against the metal face would interfere with the unit's cooling design and put you outside the listing it was certified under.
- A 42-inch prefab door must be inside-fit and exact. Fitment references list the TFC42-3/-4 opening at 42 inches wide by roughly 21 7/8 inches high. A proper door slips inside that opening and fastens within it — which is why it has to match your measured opening, not a nominal catalog size.

Measuring the TFC42 opening
Measure the firebox opening itself — width across the top, middle, and bottom, and height at the left, center, and right — and record the smallest of each. Large fireboxes are the ones most likely to have settled or been reframed during a remodel, so never assume the catalog dimension survived thirty years in your wall. Mistakes we see on 42-inch Temcos
Three come up constantly. First, burning with tempered-glass doors closed: replacement prefab doors use tempered safety glass, which is not built for direct, sustained flame — burn with the doors open and close them as the fire dies down. Second, drilling new holes in the firebox shell to force a wrong-size frame to fit; the shell is part of a listed appliance, and piercing it in the wrong places can compromise the clearances that keep your framing safe. Third, covering the air passages around the opening with an oversized frame — a zero-clearance fireplace moves room air around the firebox by design, and that airflow is not optional.
