How to Measure Your Fireplace

Brick or stone fireplace built into the wall. Openings are rarely perfectly square — always use the smallest number.

Measure the Width

Measure the width at the face of the opening at three points: top, middle, and bottom. Use the smallest number. Measure brick-to-brick, not deeper inside the firebox.

Pro Tip: For Inside Fit, round down to the nearest 1/16″. For Overlap Fit, 1/8″ tolerance is fine — the frame covers any small variance.

Measure the Height

Measure from the bottom edge to the top of the opening at left, center, and right. Use the smallest number.

Lintel Bar Rule: If the lintel bar is recessed more than 1″ into the opening, measure to the brick above it. If it sits within 1″ of the face, measure to the lintel bar.

Check if Square

Measure corner to corner diagonally both ways. If both measurements match within 1/2″, your opening is square.

Inside Fit works best when square. Overlap Fit is more forgiving — the frame covers the edge. Either way, measure to the nearest 1/8″ — we build to your exact dimensions.

Take Photos

Snap 4 photos: front view, inside the firebox, close-up of lintel bar, and any damper or hardware inside. Or use the Take a photo button above to auto-identify your fireplace.

Factory-built sealed steel firebox (Heatilator, Majestic, Superior, Lennox, Heat & Glo, Astria…). Sides are even all around — one width, one height. Model match matters more than fractions.

Find Your Model Number

Look for a metal data plate inside the firebox — usually upper-left wall, on the floor, or behind the lower trim. Photograph the entire plate (manufacturer + model + serial). This is the single most important data point — many prefabs need brand-specific frames.

Have visible louvers around the opening? Our Brookfield ZC Deluxe ships with an extended frame designed to cover factory louver trim — no demo, no patch work. Mention louvers in the notes and we'll confirm coverage from your photo.

Measure the Opening Width

Measure the inside width of the steel opening across the front (the rectangular hole, not the louver trim around it). One number is enough — prefab boxes are factory-square.

Never measure inside the firebox — that's the refractory liner, not the door opening. Stick to the front-face steel rim.

Measure the Opening Height

Measure from the bottom of the steel opening to the top, at the front face. One number. If you have a louver bar across the top, measure to under it (the door covers below).

Surround clearance: Prefab doors need 1/2″–1″ of flat surface around the opening for the magnetic frame. Note any tile lip, drywall return, or trim that limits the mounting area.
