Superior BC-42 Fireplace Doors — Custom Exact-Fit Replacement

Replacement Fireplace Doors for the Superior BC-42

The Superior BC-42 is a 42-inch wood-burning fireplace from Superior's Standard Series, built with circulating heat — one of the most widely installed prefab fireboxes in American homes from the mid-1970s through the 1990s. If your fireplace has louvered vents above and below the opening and a black metal firebox, there's a good chance you're looking at a BC-42 or one of its close siblings: the BC42I, BCF42, or BBV42, which share the same door footprint.

Before you order anything, confirm the model. Every Superior prefab has a metal rating plate riveted inside the firebox — usually on the left or right sidewall just inside the opening, or tucked behind the lower louver panel. Open the mesh screen, shine a flashlight along the side walls, and look for a tag listing the manufacturer (Superior or Lennox Hearth Products) and the model number. That tag is the single source of truth for what fits your fireplace.

Why You Can't Just Buy the Original Doors Anymore

Superior stopped producing the BC-42 decades ago, and the factory glass door kits made for it have long since disappeared from dealer shelves. Superior passed through Lennox Hearth Products and later ownership changes, and legacy door accessories for discontinued models were among the first parts to be dropped. What's left on the secondhand market is usually worn, warped, or missing hardware.

The tempting shortcut — a "universal" fireplace door from a big-box store — is the wrong answer for a prefab like the BC-42, for three reasons:

  • Prefab fireplaces need an inside-fit door. A masonry-style door overlaps the face of a brick fireplace. The BC-42 has a metal face with louvers above and below the opening, so the door frame must sit inside the opening itself, not on top of the vents. Blocking the louvers on a circulating model chokes the airflow the firebox was designed around.
  • The fit has to be exact. Universal doors come in coarse size steps. On a prefab, a gap of even a quarter inch shows, rattles, and leaks room air up the chimney all winter.
  • Listings matter. Zero-clearance fireplaces are tested and listed as a system. Doors designed for prefab use are engineered not to trap heat against the firebox in ways the unit wasn't tested for. A random masonry door isn't.

The ExceptionalFire Way: Custom Doors Built to the 1/8"

We build replacement doors for the Superior BC-42 to order, sized to your actual opening in 1/8-inch increments. Because these fireboxes were installed by thousands of different builders — sometimes with trim, surrounds, or refractory work that changes the effective opening — we never assume a "standard" BC-42 size. Your measurements drive the build, which is why the door arrives fitting like the factory intended.

Not sure what model you have, or whether your fireplace matches the tag? Snap a photo of the fireplace and the rating plate and run it through our AI Fireplace Expert — it identifies the model and the correct door style in about 15 seconds. From there, our online configurator on the prefab door collection gives you a real price instantly as you choose frame finish, glass, and handle style. No "request a quote" forms, no waiting for a callback.

How to Measure Your BC-42 Opening

You need three numbers: the width of the opening (measure at top, middle, and bottom — use the smallest), the height (measure left, center, and right — again, the smallest), and note anything that intrudes into the opening, like screen tracks or bent lintel edges. A steel tape and five minutes is all it takes. Our step-by-step measuring guide walks through it with photos, including where to hold the tape on a louvered prefab face so the door frame clears the vents. Send us those numbers through the configurator and we build to them.

What NOT to Do with a BC-42 Door

Don't Why
Burn with the glass doors closed Prefab doors like these use tempered glass and are designed to be fully open during a fire. Closed doors trap heat against the glass and firebox beyond what the unit was listed for. Close them only after the fire dies down, to stop heat loss up the flue.
Block the upper or lower louvers The BC-42 is a circulating fireplace — those vents move room air around the firebox. Covering them defeats the design and can overheat the unit.
Order by model number alone Installations vary. Two BC-42s can present different usable openings depending on trim and refractory. Always measure.
Force a masonry overlap door onto the metal face It won't seal, it covers the louvers, and drilling the prefab face can void what remains of the listing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will doors for a Superior BC-42 also fit a BC42I, BCF42, or BBV42?
These models share the same 42-inch door footprint, so the same custom door design applies. We still ask you to measure your specific opening, because trim and installation details differ from house to house.

Where is the model number on a Superior BC-42 fireplace?
On a metal rating plate inside the firebox — check the side walls just inside the opening, or behind the lower louver panel. If the tag is unreadable, photograph the fireplace and use our AI Fireplace Expert to identify it.

Can I burn wood with glass fireplace doors closed on a prefab fireplace?
No. On prefab units like the BC-42, doors should be fully open while the fire is burning and closed only as the fire dies out. That's the standard for tempered-glass prefab doors and it's how these units were tested.

Do replacement fireplace doors for the BC-42 stop cold drafts?
Yes — that's their biggest everyday benefit. An exact-fit closed door dramatically cuts the room air escaping up the chimney when the fireplace isn't in use, which a loose universal door or an open damper never will.
