The Peterson Real Fyre Evening Fyre Split Ventless Refractory Ceramic Gas Log Set offers an evening to remember in front of the warmth of a wood fire without the need for venting your fireplace. Hand crafted logs with an active natural flame and glowing embers magnify the beauty of your hearth.
This burner is equipped with an Oxygen Depletion System (ODS) pilot, which will shut off the burner should oxygen levels drop inside the fireplace.
Lit with a push button igniter, the manual safety pilot is simple to operate. The manual safety pilot will automatically close the valve when the flow of gas to the burner is disrupted or the pilot light is extinguished.
The Peterson Real Fyre Evening Fyre Split Ventless Refractory Ceramic Gas Log Set comes complete with the log set, certified burner with pre-assemble control valve and ODS safety system, custom grate, connector kit, glowing embers, bryte coals, lava-fyre granules and wood chunks. The burner comes with a pre-assembled flex hose for easy of installation and added safety. If ordering the remote model a transmitter and receiver are included.

Vent-free fireplaces are excellent in the right home and not permitted in others. It takes about ten minutes to confirm, and it is much cheaper to do it now than after installation.
What “vent-free” means
This unit burns gas with no chimney or flue, so all combustion products stay in the room. It is built and listed to ANSI Z21.11.2 and carries an oxygen-depletion sensor (ODS) that shuts off the gas if the oxygen level in the room falls.
Model fuel-gas code caps a vent-free heater at 40,000 BTU/h, limits the combined input of all unvented appliances to 20 BTU/h per cubic foot of room volume, and does not allow it to be the sole source of heat for a home. Your room size genuinely matters here.
Where it is restricted
- California — state law prohibits the sale of unvented heaters designed for use inside a dwelling. Vented decorative gas logs are expressly exempt.
- Minnesota — unvented room heaters and unvented decorative appliances may not be installed in any dwelling or occupancy. No exceptions in the rule.
- Wisconsin — permanently installed gas-fired unvented heating appliances may not be installed; unvented space heaters are separately prohibited in one- and two-family dwellings.
- Massachusetts — allowed only with a permit from the head of the fire department, inspection by the fire department and the gas inspector, a 40,000 BTU cap per room, a CO detector in the room, and never as the primary heat source.
- Manufactured (HUD-code) homes, anywhere in the US — federal rule requires fuel-burning heating appliances to be vented to the outside.
How to confirm for your address
Your city or county can be stricter than your state, and these rules change. That is why we do not publish a state-by-state map — the decision is made locally, by a person, not nationally. Call in this order:
- Local building department. Ask: is a vent-free gas fireplace permitted here, and do I need a permit? They know the adopted code edition and any local amendments.
- Fire department or fire marshal. Required in Massachusetts before the unit may be operated, and commonly the deciding authority elsewhere.
- Local or state gas / plumbing inspector. This is who signs off on the final inspection.
- Your gas utility. Some will not set or upgrade a meter for an unvented appliance.

Frequently asked questions
Vented vs. ventless gas logs — which is right for me?
Vented gas logs require a working chimney/flue (open damper during use). They produce a more realistic, taller flame and expel combustion byproducts outdoors. Ventless (vent-free) gas logs burn cleaner so they don't require a flue — but they release combustion moisture and trace byproducts into the room. Vented = more realistic look + fully outdoor exhaust. Ventless = higher heat efficiency + flexible install but check local codes (some jurisdictions restrict ventless).
Are ventless gas logs safe?
Ventless gas logs sold in the US must include an oxygen depletion sensor (ODS) by design — the unit shuts off automatically if room oxygen drops below safe levels. Most also include built-in carbon monoxide protections. To use safely: install a CO detector in the room, follow the BTU sizing limits for your room volume, crack a window if running for extended periods, and don't run continuously for more than the manufacturer's stated maximum (typically 4 hours). Some states and municipalities do not permit ventless installation — check your local code.
Can I use gas logs in my wood-burning fireplace?
Yes — vented gas logs are designed to drop into a working masonry or pre-fab wood-burning fireplace. The chimney/flue must be inspected and verified working (open damper during use). You'll also need a gas line run to the firebox if one isn't already there. Always have a licensed gas plumber install the line and have a hearth professional install and test the burner.
How do I light gas logs?
Most modern gas log sets use a millivolt valve with a wall switch or remote, or a match-light system where you ignite a pilot manually with a match. Check your specific set's manual. For first lighting after install, follow the manufacturer's burn-in procedure (typically 4–6 hours total of staged burns) to cure the logs and burner coatings before regular use.
