For door sizing the aftermarket treats all four 42-inch variants as one 42 x 23-3/8 opening, but for door design the distinction matters: a circulating firebox breathes through louvers and grille openings on its face, and the door must leave that airflow completely alone. Confirm the model on the tag
The letters are the whole game here, since A42C, A42CH, A42R, and A42RH look nearly identical installed. Find the riveted metal rating plate inside the firebox — side wall or behind the lower grille — and read the full string. Why the air channels change the door job
A circulating fireplace only earns its keep if room air can flow in through the lower intake, pass around the hot firebox, and exit the upper outlet. That constrains the door in ways a first-time buyer wouldn't guess. The door must be a true inside fit, seated within the 42 x 23-3/8 opening, so the face grilles stay unobstructed. A masonry-style overlap door is doubly wrong here — wrong because there's no brick to anchor into, and wrong because its overlapping face would sit across the very louvers the fireplace breathes through. Will a door sold for the A42R fit an A42C? The aftermarket sells one door across A42C, A42CH, A42R, and A42RH because the opening spec matches. Verify your own tag and measurements first — and note this is Heatilator's A42 family, not to be confused with 42-inch models from Superior or Majestic that use similar letters.
Can the doors stay closed during a fire? Standard tempered glass, no — open while burning, closed as the fire dies to stop the flue from vacuuming warm air out overnight. Choose ceramic glass at configuration if you want closed-door burning.
