Heatilator Fireplace Doors — Custom Replacements, Built by Model

Heatilator built prefabricated (zero-clearance) fireboxes into American production homes by the tens of thousands from the 1990s through the 2000s. Most owners inherited theirs with the house — often with no doors at all, or with an original bifold set that has since rusted, warped, or cracked. Heatilator no longer makes door kits for the discontinued models, and a universal door from a big-box store will not fit a prefab face. What does fit is a door built to your opening.

Find your Heatilator model

Heatilator affixes a permanent metal rating plate to every fireplace. On wood-burning models the tag sits inside the firebox itself — check the side walls, the floor near the front edge, or just behind the screen and under the louvered face. Bring a flashlight; the print is small and usually soot-covered.

You may not find your exact designation on the tag. Suffixed variants such as BC36R and BC36C belong to the same door family as the BC36, and the closely related E36 and EC36 are grouped with them by aftermarket suppliers. Write down the full model number exactly as stamped, letters included.

Why a universal door will not fit

A prefabricated firebox is sheet metal, not masonry: a thin steel face, louvers, and engineered air passages the unit needs to cool itself. A universal or masonry-style door is designed to overlap a brick face and clamp to it. On a prefab that overlap sits proud of the face and blocks the louvers and cooling-air paths.

• Prefab fireplaces need an inside-fit door that mounts within the opening itself.
• Nominal size is not door size. A "36-inch" fireplace is a size class, not a measurement. Actual openings vary between installations because surrounding brick, tile or facing work changes the usable opening.
• The tolerance is tight. A door that is half an inch off will not seat in an inside-fit frame — which is why we build to the nearest 1/8 inch instead of stocking standard sizes.

How to measure your opening

You need three numbers, and you should record the smaller figure of each pair — openings settle and facing work is rarely perfectly square.

1. Opening width — measure at the top and at the bottom.
2. Opening height — measure at the left and at the right.
3. Rear width — if the firebox tapers toward the back.
