Confirm it's an HD42B — not an HB42A
Heatilator's 42-inch lineup is a minefield of similar-looking model numbers. The HD42B (and its HD42BI variant, covered by the same replacement listings) has a 22-1/2-inch-tall opening. The HB42A and the E42/EC42 family run shorter at 20-15/16 inches. Same width, different height — a door ordered for the wrong one will either not seat or leave a visible strip of raw firebox. Measure before you shop
Do this even before browsing styles, because your measurements — not the model number — are what we actually build to. With any old screen or frame removed from view, take the opening width at top, middle, and bottom, and the height at left, center, and right, exactly as shown in our measuring guide. Prefab openings drift with age and remodeling, so treat the published 42 x 22-1/2 spec as a checkpoint, not a promise. Why exact fit matters more at 42 inches
On a wide opening, every error multiplies. A frame that's a half-inch shy spread across 42 inches shows daylight at both ends. Wide bi-fold panels that aren't squared to the actual opening bind on their hinges. And an inside-fit door — the only correct style for this firebox — depends on the frame meeting the opening on all four sides to do its real jobs: blocking the chimney draft that siphons heated air out of your house all winter, and screening embers when the fire is live. Overlap-style masonry doors, whatever their size, are the wrong tool here; they mount into brick that this fireplace does not have.
