Natural gas vs propane Every Hargrove log set is configured at the factory for either Natural Gas (NG) or Liquid Propane (LP). They are NOT interchangeable in the field. Confirm your fuel type before ordering — check the rating plate on your existing fireplace insert or call your gas supplier. Installation — what to know Must be installed by a licensed plumber/gas fitter. Never DIY a gas line installation. Vented logs require a working chimney with open damper during operation. Vent-free logs require an oxygen depletion sensor (ODS) — included on all Hargrove vent-free sets. Lead time: 5-10 business days for in-stock sets; 14-21 days for custom configurations. Frequently asked questions Can I install gas logs in my wood-burning fireplace? Yes — converting a wood-burning fireplace to gas logs is one of the most popular upgrades. You'll need a gas line run to the firebox (call a licensed plumber). The chimney stays open for vented logs; vent-free works without modification. How much does it cost to run gas logs? Most vented log sets consume 60,000-90,000 BTU/hr. At typical natural gas rates ($1.20/therm), that's roughly $0.70-$1.10 per hour of operation. Vent-free sets run smaller (25,000-40,000 BTU) and cost $0.30-$0.50 per hour. Do gas logs produce real heat? Vent-free yes — most heat stays in the room. Vented logs prioritize flame aesthetics over heat (most warmth goes up the chimney). For heat AND realism, consider a gas insert instead of standard logs. Are gas logs safe? Hargrove logs include automatic safety pilots and (vent-free models) oxygen depletion sensors. Both technologies have been standard for 30+ years. Annual inspection by a chimney sweep is recommended for vented setups. Can I order Hargrove gas logs anywhere in the US? Yes — ExceptionalFire ships free across the continental US. Gas Logs — Vented & Ventless, Real Flames Without the Mess
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between vented and ventless gas logs?
Vented logs require an open chimney/damper during operation — they produce real high flames and significant heat but vent combustion byproducts up the chimney. Ventless (vent-free) logs use a precise gas-air mix with very clean burn — no chimney needed, but limited operating time per code.
Are gas logs cheaper than wood?
Up-front yes — a typical gas log set runs $400-$1,200 vs. years of firewood costs. Operating cost depends on local gas rates: vented logs use 60,000-80,000 BTU/hr; ventless 25,000-40,000. At $1.20/therm, a 4-hour vented burn costs about $3.20.
Can I install gas logs in any fireplace?
Most masonry fireplaces with a working damper accept vented gas logs. Prefab fireplaces require the gas log set rated for that specific make and model — substituting can void the prefab warranty. Ventless logs require a fireplace certified for ventless operation by your local code.
Do I need a professional installer?
Code requires a licensed gas plumber to make the gas connection in most US jurisdictions. The log placement itself can be DIY (carefully follow the manufacturer's burner-bed pattern), but the gas line and flame-safety device must be installed by a pro.
How realistic do gas logs look?
Modern ceramic refractory logs are highly realistic — bark texture, grain detail, and char patterns molded from real wood. The flames in vented logs are large and yellow-orange like a real wood fire. Ventless flames are bluer and shorter due to the cleaner burn requirement.
How long does a gas log set last?
The ceramic logs themselves last 10-15+ years if not handled roughly. The burner and pilot assembly are typically warranted 5 years. Ignition components (thermocouples, valves) can need replacement at 8-12 years. Most components are user-replaceable.
